Midwife ~
Your guide and companion on this challenging and miraculous journey.

I encourage mothers to find the ancient birthing wisdom within themselves and welcome new babies with respect and gentleness. My experience as an herbalist, use of Direct Perception and being the mother of three breastfed children add to what I can offer you.

My grandparents, parents, unlces and aunts were all born at home with midwives back in China and Hong Kong. The youngest of my three grown up children was born at home before the doctor arrived! Preserving the right of women to birth in the sanctity of their own homes is important to me.

Birth is a natural process that unfolds in its own way and timing. Mothers know how to give birth and babies know how to be born. There are many normal variations and each mother and baby will experience the process in their own unique way. I try not to interfere.

I trained by apprenticing with different midwives and have been attending homebirths since November 1990 in the southern Vermont area. I am a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) licensed in the state of Vermont (LM). Happy Heart Herbals is my herbal practice and apothecary.

As a midwife, I assist you by sharing my experience and knowledge, identifying interferences to the birthing process and offering support, education and referral when needed. I see my relationship with the parents as a partnership. Together, we work to create an environment conducive to natural birthing.
After the baby is born, I visit to check that breastfeeding, baby care, the mother’s physical recovery and emotional adjustments are going smoothly.

“We feel so blessed to have met you at this amazing time in our lives. You truly have a spiritual gift in the way you welcomed baby Rowan into this world. We felt so much confidence in the birth process with you, that trust in nature and knowledge of preparation would bring us to where we are today.”- K, K & R, Ludlow, VT
Birth Services:

Homebirth

Midwifery service for homebirth includes: Free interview appointment, guidance and education throughout our time working together, prenatal visits, attending your birth, postpartum visits, phone consultations, referral and consultation when needed.

I usually have an assistant who will attend the home visit at 36 weeks and the birth.  An apprentice may also be present.

VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean)
I support mothers choosing VBAC. Women’s bodies are made to birth, are capable of healing after surgery. Babies know how to be born. Constraining birth to narrow medical parameters often results in problems. Each mother/baby unit will find their own way to birth if allowed to. Nature is much wiser and more creative than we are. We can learn from her how to flow in harmony with her cycles and processes.

I offer education and attend VBAC births.

Waterbirth

Water- the main element associated with birth. Women benefit from interacting with water every day during pregnancy, especially wild water, such as a stream or pond. During birth, being immersed in a deep tub where the water can cover your belly changes the feel of the contractions and is deeply relaxing which enhances natural labor.

I am experienced with waterbirth.

Postpartum Home Care
The "babymoon" is a special and sensitive time for the new family deserving of the same individualized support as the pregnancy and birth. I provide home visits to facilitate mother's postpartum healing, help with breastfeeding, learning to care for the baby.

Support for Unassisted Pregnancy and Childbirth/Freebirth

I believe parents have the ability to birth without midwives. I support them in educating themselves and taking responsibility for their birth experience. UC parents may be the only folks experiencing uninterfered with, truly natural childbirth. Midwives have much to learn from them.

I offer education and individual support.

Birth Education
I am committed to keeping alive the old ways of being with women, developing our tools (herbs and other natural therapies, simple ritual, love) and passing along the wisdom.

Wholistic Birth Education for Parents
Using Nature as our guide and model, we learn how to flow with the cycles and processes of pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period.
Topics covered: birthing with awareness, physiologic birth, unexpected outcomes, medical procedures, mother and baby care, postpartum, breastfeeding.
Birth art exercises, relaxation techniques, pain coping strategies, embracing fears, finding our inner wisdom and power help get Heart and mind working together as you undertake this journey to parenthood.
